Singer-Songwriter Joel Rafael wins Top Prize in Folk Category at the International Acoustic Music Awards
California songwriter and seminal folk artist Joel Rafael was awarded the top prize in Folk/Americana/Roots at 2013’s International Acoustic Music Awards for his recording of “Dance Around My Atom Fire,” a song he co-wrote with Woody Guthrie. The 9th Annual IAMA’s were announced on Monday, February 4th. Judging is based on excellence in music performance, songwriting, composition, song choice, music production, originality and artistry.
“Dance Around My Atom Fire” is featured on Rafael’s recently released America Come Home, on Inside Recordings, a label started by Jackson Browne and his management. For this song, Joel wrote the music to a set of Woody Guthrie lyrics; Joel has a long history of celebrating the legacy of Woody Guthrie through his 2-CD collection, Songs of Woody Guthrie, Vol. 1 & 2. America Come Home is a socially conscious high-energy collection of songs in keeping with the great folk tradition- a genre that Rafael has mastered.
Joel Rafael has been writing and performing since 1978 and over the past decades has released a stunning collection of eight Americana albums. He has opened for acts such as Rick Danko, Emmylou Harris, John Lee Hooker, John Stewart, Laura Nyro and Taj Mahal.
